Excerpts from SceneOne Plus Trial by Jury / HMS Pinafore Review

by  Steve O’Neill review   18 October 2018

“I am a renewed man and all the richer for going to see production.

It was absolutely brilliant from the first opening note to the last strident chord!

Set in front of curtains, the evening began with the rousing chorus of Trial by Jury………the stage was packed by a very sizeable chorus of very, very fine monochrome singers.  The overall effect was highly stylised both in the acting and of a black and white film with splashes of colour coming from the defendant’s new girlfriend, jilted fiancée and the Judge. I love minimalism in theatre so the use of two simple frames that became doors, dock and juror’s bench really impressed.

After 35 minutes that felt more like 10, the utter nonsense and hilarity of Trial by Jury came to an end and I was thoroughly awake, energised and eagerly awaiting HMS Pinafore……………….The director, Claire Camble-Hutchins, brought some brilliant touches to the whole production which was deftly performed and hugely funny.  She even brought bits of it (more) up to date – I loved the ‘20s flapper girls, Sir Joseph Porter’s entourage, and she even sneaked in a few very modern references to hilarious effect.………………..The cast were all fantastic, obviously having the time of their lives and the sizeable audience couldn’t help but have a great time too.

Excerpt from Stour and Avon Magazine Review – 26th October 2018

by Julie Adams

“………………..Good work by Musical Director Helen Brind who coaxed singers and orchestra to make the most of Sullivan’s sublime music and plaudits to Director and Choreographer Claire Camble-Hutchins. She used her cast – and Gilbert’s witty words – imaginatively to produce a stylish, fast-paced and entertaining double-bill. Look out for Bournemouth GaSP next year, surprises are promised. “

Sceneoneplus review excerpts from the review by K D Johnson

“Stylish projected sequences onto hanging boards during the overture tell some of the back story of the principals, showing the infant Casilda growing up in Spain and the infant prince growing up in Venice and then the adult Casilda and her parents journeying overseas to Venice. The projections onto these boards throughout the show are something that D’Oyly Carte couldn’t even have dreamed of, but it is one of the many excellent modernisations of this show”………..

…….. “It seems traditional, certainly with this society, to insert some modern references and humour into Gilbert’s libretto, so we chuckle at the implication that the Spanish Inquisitor is so well informed because ‘he follows it all on Twitter’, or that Marco and Giuseppe have no-one to ‘like their Facebook posts’ – good stuff!

The costumes and wigs are colourful and extravagant, the effects and staging are stylish, the orchestra are superb, the singing is excellent, the choreography is delightful, the sound quality is flawless. I am running out of superlatives.“

NODA Review

“…This was a very enjoyable production with a superb orchestra, excellent chorus singing and top class leading performers, largely following a traditional style with simple and very effective choreography. Thecostumes were excellent…”

Scenoneplus review excerpts from the review by Linda Kirkman

“….the company is so lucky to have several young principals who, because of their youth, make their roles seem so right. Adam Davis (Nanki-Poo), Mehreen Shah (Yum-Yum), Camilla Foster Mitchell (Pitti-Sing) and Amy McIntosh (Peep-Bo) are all utterly believable, singing and acting exceptionally well….

….Ian Metcalfe is no stranger to playing Ko-Ko either, and he comes close to stealing the show with a superb performance in which, as tradition demands, his Little List includes recent headlines including, of course, Brexit and Donald Trump. He is well complemented by Amanda King’s outstanding Katisha, and the two of them really are a match made in heaven, not least during the moving and beautifully performed Tit Willow….

….There is very strong chorus work, with simple but unusual and effective choreography, and whilst standing holding bamboo ‘frames’ to complement the main set might look easy, the men involved in this certainly had their work cut out during ‘Here’s a how-de-do’ as they ran about the stage….

….the rapturous applause from a near-capacity first-night audience showed that this beautifully costumed production has been received very well indeed, as it most certainly deserves.

Audience reviews:

  • Thoroughly enjoyed this performance. It was the first time I had seen this company & I was really impressed with quality of the singing especially their diction. The choreography was excellent too. The sound quality, lighting & costumes were equally good. I will definitely see them again in the future
Excellent production as was the one last year . They truly deserve the title of best G and S Society in the South
  • Excellent performance from all the players, some great local comic dialogue and of course the opening scene using back projection was stunning.
One of the best G&S shows I have seen. Thank you.
  • Five star entertainment. Hard to believe it was first night, it was so polished. Great music of course, played and sung extremely well and lots of laughs all the way through. The story of Ruddigore is very silly and very complicated but this production made it easy to follow and brought out all the comedy. I loved every minute of it.
  • I thoroughly enjoyed the show – although an amateur production it was very polished and there was an abundance of talent among the cast.
We didn’t know what to expect from the show……we loved it, delightfully bonkers!!! My 8 year old daughter is hoping for a Ruddigore 2!!
  • A very classy production of a difficult G&S composition. All lead singers kept momentum with musical and acting talent. Dancing and choreography were a delightful bonus. Best costumes I have seen for ages.
  • At least ten stars! A really first class performance and enjoyed by everybody. Beautiful singing, beautiful voices, wonderful choreography, superb ballet solo and on-the-spot orchestra. We loved the Cornish village setting and the castle. In fact a perfect evening’s entertainment. A big thank you to every one!
  • I was going to write to you to say how much we enjoyed the show so i can express our delight in this feedback . The singing, acting and costumes were all excellent, we have seen about 5 or 6 of your shows and this was by far the best. The singing was,to us,up to classical opera standard, and that young girl who performed the ballet movements,WOW! We also thought that Ruddigore is by far the funniest of the G&S shows that we have seen, good acting of course helps. And the trio sung “I’m aware of the awful situation”without slip,so impressive.Thank you for such wonderful entertainment.
